Week 8: Sense of Place

A designer's role is to solve problems with effective visual communication.

The Importance of Observation
How does a designer "know" what imagery or content to include om the design? This is where observation comes in. Being observant means to be attentive to your surroundings, to pay attention to the details and to be analytical towards them.
For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings, and such.

In modern design, Instagram is the platform to get a lot of inspirations.

8 Ways to Improve Your Powers of Observation
- Know your subject
- Slow down and look outward
- Try something new
- Improve your concentration by cutting out distractions
- Challenge yourself to a mental workout
- Test your observation by playing a memory game
- Record and consider your observations
- Stay inquisitive

Observing is an active of acquiring information, through the senses of a subject matter in its natural setting. Our senses are important for us to know, feel, understand, analyze, and even plan what to do. Observation is important to designers as it enables them to see "problems", as well as getting ideas for solutions to those problems.

Sense of Place
Notice on how: cropping, proportioned composition, and emphasis are used to bring attention to each picture to enhance the sense of place.

Fig 1.3: Enhancing Sense of Place

Think about the place you're in now, or a place you had spent some time at previously, or a place that had created a lasting memory in you. How do you express your sense of that place? Start documenting the observations (photographs, diary, talking to relevant people, etc.) and create the ideas in a mindmap.

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 2: Sense of Place

Each person has their own kind of story. It is the same as me. And their story can either be a good or bad memory to themselves. I have a specific place that came to my mind after receiving this task. It is a place that can't be described by words because I have a lot of stories when spending there for about 3 months, right before the uni days started. This place is a hotel and also an apartment building located in South Jakarta (I'm sorry I can't mention the name). I spent my school holidays in that apartment while waiting for my parent to finish the medical treatment. It was the very first time I left my home for a looong time. There's nothing really special happened there, all I did every day was like everyone's doing (wake up, eat, watch TV, sleep, and repeat), except for some particular days (I went out to the hospital). This is the building picture that I took from the hospital.

However, it was really strange that I need to check out from that place after 3 months. I felt like I'm leaving my comfort place I'd been for the past months although it is not even my real house. I missed seeing the scenery from the 39th-floor balcony every day. It wasn't that great tho, but I really couldn't move on from it for several weeks. I'll share some photos that I took from the balcony.

Who knows that I would be there again after 2 months. Here I'm again, in the same building, but this time I'm at the hotel, 7th floor (it's actually 5th floor). At first, I thought that the view wouldn't be as pretty as the past one, but I think I got it wrong. It's really a great view and I still love it, even though it is only from the 7th floor. This time, I spent more time healing there, getting out from my busy uni days for a while (it's independent learning week). Although I went there for my parent's check-up schedule, but it did feel like I was on a staycation. Here are some pictures I took.

Fig 2.1.5: A beautiful scenery view with tall buildings behind it, 18.10.2021

I don't know why, but I really fell in love with this last photograph (Fig 2.1.5). I think, the picture itself is describing a lot; having a short escape (escaping from a tough reality for a while), going on a staycation at a "hidden gem" place in the midst of a busy metropolitan city. That's why I picked this photograph as my project 2 reference.

That's how the long short story ended. Now, I'll proceed to do my project 2. I won't make it 100% the same as Fig 2.1.5, I'll go out with my new ideas .

After finishing the rough sketch, I then started doing the drawing.

I'll also provide the making process video below, but I wanna apologize in advance because it looks so messy (the whole process).

Last but not least, I wanted to animate my artwork. I planned to add a sun, and then make the animation of it rising, although it's not from the beginning.

Final Outcome

So, these are the final outcome of my project 2. I put additional Fig 2.3.2 because it looks really nice (it's actually made for the animation part).

FEEDBACK

General Feedback
Dr Charles told the students to analyze the space and everything related. The design has to evoke the sense of place. Look at existing artist/designer that has successfully represented it. Things to explore: think about layers, space, figure-ground to make some sense of emerging, use an outline, borders.

REFLECTIONS

While people are saying Project 1 is their favorite task, I will say that this Project 2 is selected to be my favorite Design Principles task. I think I learnt many things while I was in that place. A lot of things that happened there have changed my life (my habits, paradigm, etc). And through this task, it's somehow being recalled again, all the things I've been through for past months (both good and bad things), and how my life changed at present.
