Week 1: Motion Graphics

What is Motion Graphics?
Motion graphic means graphic in movement.

Motion Graphics = Composition + Animation
- Composition = Graphics + Typography
- Animation = Movement + Rhythm

Motion Graphics Design Process
Step 1: Write a Script That Tells a Story
- Step 2: Storyboard While You Brainstorm the Visual Treatment
- Step 3: Take Your Storyboards into Design
- Step 4: Animate the Final Designs

Week 2: Motion Graphics Practical

Animation vs. Motion Graphics
Animation is the images that create illusion of movement.
4 types of Animation:
- 2D Animation
- 3D Animation
- Stop Motion Animation
- Motion Graphics

Fig 1.2.1: Example of animation

Unlike the previously mentioned types of animation, motion graphics are not driven by characters or storylines. This art form focuses on the ability to move graphic elements, shapes, and text. This process is commonly used for things like television promotions, explainer videos, and animated logos. The skillset necessary for the other types of animation doesn't apply to motion graphics because there's no need to mimic body movement or facial expressions.

Motion Graphics Anatomy
- Text Animation = Kinetic Typography
- Vector Animation = Graphic elements created in Adobe Illustrator
- Chart Visualization
- Character Animation = Wiggling

Week 3: Motion Graphics Chart

A chart is a graphical representation for data visualization.

INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise 3: Kinetic Typography

During this exercise, we were assigned to create a Kinetic Typography animation with our groupmates. The song can be chosen by ourselves, but our group decided to use the given song from the lecturer, which is So What by P!nk. After a short discussion, we finally divided our individual parts. Here's the breakdown.

After dividing our parts, I started arranging and designing the layout.

Our group decided to use the same typeface and color palette for the design. For the typeface, we use Bebas Kai typeface, and here's our color palette.

Next, I proceed to the animation process.

Finally, here's the final outcome of my parts and the whole song.

Exercise 4: Charts

For this exercise, there are 4 different charts, which are pie chart, donut chart, bar chart, and line chart. Each student will only create one chart that had been given from the lecturer, and I got the donut chart.

I began to work on the task based on the given data with the topic "Impact of COVID-19 on Inbound Student Mobility".

Before working on this, I watched and followed the tutorial by Mr. Martin, so what I did was almost the same as his. I also used these color palette for my design.

Next, I moved on to the making process.

REFLECTIONS

Through these two motion graphic exercises, I really learnt a lot of new things to be applied in my animation. This is also my first time doing the animation for text, so I really had fun while making it because I can explore those tools freely. This might be only 10% of After Effects' knowledge, but I realized that it really helps making my animation becomes better than before. Also after I finished making those two tasks, I felt so proud of myself because I never expect that I'll be able to create an animation like these someday, but I made it.
