Storytelling in Film

Story = What happened?
The set of all the events in cause-effect relationships occurring in time and space, both the ones explicitly presented and those the viewer infers constitutes the story.

Plot = Why do they happen? And how?

Everything is visibly and audibly present in the film, and material that is extraneous to the story world. The best method for understanding a film’s narrative system is to create a plot segmentation, a scene-by-scene outline of the entire film.

3 – ACT Structure

- Beginning

Setup/introduction of a story

- Middle

Confrontation of a problem

- End

Resolution of problems

What is the Three Act Structure - Diagram
Fig 1.1: The Three-Act Structure

Story Structure

1. Plot Point I - The plot thickens - The "inciting incident" - Turn the story in a new direction - Sets up what Act Two is going to be - Raises the stakes - Reminder of the narrative enigma; presents the possibility of a different outcome

2. Plot Point II - The longest mile - The "Climactic Turning Point" - Protagonist's quest reaches critical mass - Possible solution is presented - Biggest cliffhanger (will the protagonist win or lose?)

Act 1 Beginning/Setup - To introduce the world - To introduce the main characters - To establish the dramatic situation - Leads to an incident that complicates the story (Plot Point I).

Act 2 Middle/Confrontation - Known as rising action - To develop obstacles/complications - Leads to the climax of the story (Plot Point II).

Act 3 – End/Resolution - Ending of climax

- Answer to all obstacles/problems
- Tying the loose ends

INSTRUCTIONS

Week 1: Video Editing Exercise

During the first week, students were assigned to arrange shots on timeline with the proper order. There are two videos to edit in Adobe Premiere Pro.

- Mints Video
For this first video, we can arrange them easily because the footages are already in the right order according to the footage title. So we just need to drag and drop it according to its title (01, 02, 03, etc.). The original footages can be found here.

- Doritos Video
For this second video, firstly, we have to watch each footage properly to understand the whole story. After watching each footage, we can try to arrange them by seeing which one is more suitable. The shots need to be in proper order so the story can be delivered perfectly. The original footages can be found here.

Week 3: 3 Act Structure

Students are given an exercise to analyze the 3 act structure of some video clips. We have to watch the clips and then analyze which part is the Act 1, Plot point 1, Act 2, Plot point 2, Climax, and Plot point 3. Here is my 3-act structure documentation.

REFLECTIONS

This module is really new for me. I haven't ever tried to use Adobe Premiere Pro before this. I'm so glad that we were taught to use the software step by step from the beginning because I really had no idea how to operate Adobe Premiere Pro. With the instruction given by the lecturer, I follow all his step-by-step videos to kick start using this software. Students were also taught to arrange the order of the video sequence. After doing the two video editing exercises, I realized that it's not that difficult to use this software. However, this is only the beginning of everything, I hope that the further assignments that gonna use this software won't cause a problem for me.
