Week 1: E-Portfolio, Bezier, Favorite Graphic Design

- Bezier Game

In the first week of DPI Class, Mr. Martin shared with us a website called Bezier and told us to have a practice there. It is a game that helps us to improve our pen tool skill. Some of the levels were so difficult that I had to spend my time and use my brain more but it was so fun. Although I couldn't finish the whole game, it was a really exciting game to play because I can get my pen tool skill improved by playing it. Link to play: https://bezier.method.ac

Design #1
This is the first graphic design work that I picked. It may seem like an abstract work but I really love this kind of design because it has a great color contrast and it shows a futuristic feeling. I really like how they combine those colors (black, neon green, and shock pink) together, so it is easier for us to get what the creator wants to express.

Fig 2.1.7: Design #1, 24.08.2021

Design #2
The second work that caught my eye is this poster. It used nice color transitions and gradients as the background, and the combination of sliced head design with flowers as the main object. Somehow I really enjoyed seeing this kind of artwork, maybe because I'm seeing this kind of design too often on my social media timeline lately.

Fig 2.1.8: Design #2, 24.08.2021

Design #3
This artwork design with the retro style really makes me feel like I'm going back to the 90s, even though I haven't been there before. The combination of blue and orange is absolutely the perfect combo. Not to forget the bold fonts and the colorful clip-arts which make the artwork looks more attractive. Really love the whole design!

Week 3: Paths. Masking. Layering

During this week's class, Mr Martin gave us the tutorial to use some of the tools in Adobe Photoshop. He showed us how to use each of the tools, such as marquee tools, lasso tools, magic wand tool, selection tools, and even the pen tool as well. I used a polygonal lasso tool for the first table and a magic wand tool for the second and third table. We also got to learn masking and layering the objects. Lastly, Mr. Martin also showed the students how to create a good composition of a digital collage.

Week 4: Adjustment Layers & Filters

On week 4, we learnt how to match the lighting in a photo, also how to work on adjustment layers and filters. Mr Martin provided the students a stock photo and told us to follow the steps he showed in the tutorial class.

Week 5: Photo Manipulation

For this part, we should use the picture of a character 'SHAZAM' that was provided by the lecturer. Students also need to use the given background. Before start doing this, I watched the tutorial from Mr. Martin, so I did almost the same step as his.

Fig 2.4.1: Hearst Mansion

Fig 2.4.2: Shazam

First thing to do is selecting the object with Quick Selection Tool, and after having the final result, then do layer masking.

Fig 2.4.3: Process of selecting and masking, 25.09.2021

Next, I adjusted the color of my object and add some noise to make it looks more real. Also created shadow behind the character using the brush tool. To get the better shadow, I used the Gaussian Blur filter.

Fig 2.4.4: Adjusting the object, 25.09.2021

Fig 2.4.5: Creating shadow, 25.09.2021

Lastly, I made the 'SHAZAM' reflection. I duplicated from the 'SHAZAM' layer and flipped it vertically, then erased some parts of his legs. Later I adjusted again the color to a bit darker and distorted it using the ripple filter to make it looks more like reflection. For those part, I forgot to screenshot the steps.

Week 6: Recoloring Black & White

This week, students were told to recolor the provided image by turning it into color photo. Before I started recoloring the image, I watched the given tutorial video by Mr. Martin.

This is the image we're going to recolor.

Fig 2.5.1: Black & White Photo

So after I finished watching the tutorial, I started to do my work. Firstly, I chose the skin tone for his face (has to be match with human's skin color). Then I used the brush tool and brushed all over his face, except the eyes and mouth, and hair. Next, I played with the blend mode and opacity to make it looks more real. I applied the same steps for the rest of the parts (eyes, mouth, hair, suit). Lastly, I also recolored the background, so it looks more colorful. I followed the same steps as Mr. Martin's by adding a new layer above the original image first and filled the layer with the color I like. To mask that layer, I chose to select the background with quick selection tool. And here I will be showing my recoloring process.

Week 7: Advanced Recoloring

During this week, we again got the assignment to recolor two Black & White images. For this one (demo), Mr. Martin had provided one particular photo for us. This may seem the same as the previous week's exercise, however, this time we're gonna apply a different technique to recolor it.

Fig 2.6.1: Black & White Photo

Fig 2.6.2: Hair color reference

Fig 2.6.3: Skin color reference

Firstly, we need to get the color palette, which can be obtained from the same folder. Before continue doing the masking part, select the part we want to mask using Quick Selection Tool, here I chose her hair. Next, choose Select>Select & Mask option or (Alt+Ctrl+R) to get into masking part. Use the Refine Edge Brush Tool to refine the selection, and after that, change the output settings to Layer Mask. After doing the masking part, we need to add the Solid Color to that layer. Then, drag and drop the layer to the new solid layer to replace layer mask. Lastly, change the blend mode to Overlay or Soft Light (can also choose the other blending mode as long as it fits well).

Fig 2.6.4: Making color palette, 09.10.2021

Fig 2.6.5: Masking the hair, 09.10.2021

I repeated the same steps as the hair part for the rest of them (eyes, lips, skin, fur).

Week 10: After Effects Exercise

During this week, we were assigned to do this After Effects exercise using a digital collage work provided by the lecturer. First thing first, we need to import the .psd file in After Effects. After that, we can start doing the exercise by following the tutorial from our lecturers.

Fig 2.7.1: Done importing .psd file, 30.10.2021

Then I began to animate the elements. I tried all the transform tools provided there, and here's some glimpse of what did I do.

I also tried applying the easy ease as what the lecturer suggested.

Next, I tried more complex animation for this particular element.

And lastly, I also applied the masking tool for the element.

Finally, here's the final outcome of the animation.

REFLECTION

The exercise thingy that we learnt these past 10 weeks really helped me improving my editing skills. At the very beginning, I still wasn't sure if I can keep up with this module since I was very poor in editing and had no experience in this field. However, all the exercises that I completed every week really got my skills improved. I was only a student with zero Photoshop and After Effects skills, but with the learning I got every week, I can now master some tools and skills in Photoshop. I really got them all in one. The pen tool skill, some object selecting tools skills, photo manipulating skill, adjusting and recoloring skill, and also simple animating skill, I think I can do them with less worry now. Actually I'm not really mastering those tools, but I think I can at least operate and use the tools well and I have less concern now regarding the Photoshop.
